Afiya’s journey from a sassy 5-year-old to a renowned fashion designer and advocate for women’s empowerment is nothing short of inspiring. Even at a young age, she possessed a distinct sense of style, refusing to settle for anything less than what truly resonated with her. Afiya’s passion for fashion only grew stronger as she entered her teenage years, accompanied by an innate entrepreneurial spirit.

At just 16 years old, Afiya fearlessly utilized her mother’s credit card to shop online, eventually reselling the carefully chosen clothing to her mother’s friends, coworkers, and even her teachers at school. It was evident that she possessed a natural talent for curating unique pieces that captivated those around her. Recognizing her calling, Afiya made the decision to enroll into fashion school at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. Where she started designing fashion jewelry which quickly became popular.

While pursuing her studies, Afiya opened her very first boutique at 20 years old, in the vibrant neighborhood of Woodbrook in Port of Spain. Continuing her practice of retailing the clothes she sourced online, she soon discovered a common sentiment among her customers—they yearned for something different. Inspired by this demand, Afiya embarked on a new journey, designing her own collection that she proudly showcased at the esteemed Trinidad Lookbook’s fashion show, Style Spirit.

Her designs instantly struck a chord with her clientele, who swiftly shifted their attention solely to Afiya’s creations. 

Afiya decided to close her boutique after two successful years, dedicating her time to the joys and responsibilities of motherhood. The birth of her beautiful baby boy infused her with even greater motivation to build her brand and garner invaluable experience in the retail and marketing industry.

Afiya’s determination led her to join a prominent retail company as their marketing coordinator. Her unwavering dedication and exceptional skills propelled her swiftly through the ranks, earning her a promotion to marketing manager. With each passing day, Afiya grew more proficient in her craft, accumulating invaluable knowledge and skills that would serve her well in her future endeavors.

Armed with a newfound wealth of experience, Afiya began organizing her own pop-up shops, showcasing her designs to a wider audience not only in Trinidad and Tobago, but internationally as well. Afiya was also chosen to represent Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion industry on two occasions for Carifesta. The overwhelming success of these events prompted her to open another store in Port of Spain, solidifying her position as a prominent fashion designer in Trinidad and Tobago. Afiya’s creativity and talent quickly caught the attention of many soca artists, leading to fruitful collaborations and styling opportunities for corporate ad campaigns. Her work garnered recognition from prestigious magazines, such as Trinidad Express Women’s Magazine, and she graced the pages of renowned newspapers like Newsday. Her captivating story also caught the eye of media outlets beyond her homeland, earning her a feature in the Jamaican Gleaner Newspapers.

Expanding her reach further, Afiya extended her pop-up shops to destinations such as Jamaica, Barbados, and New York. These ventures proved to be highly successful, leading to partnerships with retail stores, in Hilton Hotel Trinidad and Downtown Atlanta. Through these collaborations, Afiya was able to close her boutique, redirecting her focus towards marketing and production—areas that fueled her passion and aligned with her aspirations.

Throughout her journey, Afiya has remained unwavering in her commitment to women’s empowerment. She does motivational talks and shares her story wherever she is invited to. Her designs not only accentuate the beauty and individuality of each wearer but also serve as a medium for self-expression and confidence. Afiya’s vision extends beyond fashion; it encompasses the belief that every woman deserves to feel empowered, celebrated, and comfortable in her own skin.
